A new tourism project that will help local marine leisure activity providers including restaurants and pubs to work together to bundle their offering and create packages that can be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, will be launched on Tuesday next in the LYIT School of Tourism in Killybegs by Cathaoirleach Cllr. Terence Slowey.
This new project which is known as Donegal’s Atlantic Coastal Trail aims to promote County Donegal as a world-class marine leisure and seafood destination and will incorporate a unique training programme, which has been developed to assist business owners and employees of all types of tourism enterprises.
Barney McLaughlin, Donegal County Council says that “this project provides businesses in the marine tourism and food sector with an opportunity to look at news ways to add value to their existing product offering. This is about looking at how we can further promote the opportunities that exist for this sector along the coast of Donegal on the Wild Atlantic Way. Research shows that visitors to the Wild Atlantic Way are looking for something different and want to explore the uniqueness of the area they are visiting. They want to enjoy the unique food and marine experiences along our coastline and this project will help businesses work together to bundle their offering and create experiential packages that can be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike".
He added “the inclusion of the islands adds an additional unique element to this project where visitors can experience something different and unexplored. The goal of this project is to raise awareness of the excellent marine leisure and seafood opportunities on the Donegal coast and islands and to encourage local communities to experience our own marine leisure activities and seafood coast that is right on our doorstep and perhaps unexplored.”
This course will be offered as a Level 6 Special Purpose Award by LYIT’s School of Tourism in collaboration with Donegal County Council and Údarás na Gaeltachta. It will be beneficial for those interested in seafood and marine/coastal tourism and wish to gain a greater understanding of these areas. The programme which will be delivered at LYIT’s the School of Tourism, Killybegs Campus over 13 weeks, 1 day per week, commencing this September is fully funded with no cost to the applicant. The modules will be delivered by LYIT staff, in conjunction with a panel of guest lecturers and will include lectures, seminars, workshops familiarisation visits and excursions.
